To help bring awareness the upcoming release of her LP Alive, Jessie J sat in a recent interview to elaborate more on the album and it's process.
Jessie J talks about how different it was this time around compared to her debut. She shares the meaning behind the album's cover art, and also elaborates on the duet 'Conquer The World' with Brandy.
Jessie also lets out the bag that she, Brandy and Monica were to perform a tribute to Diana Ross at Clive Davis' pre Grammy party last year. Due to the untimely death of Whitney Houston earlier that day, the performance was cancelled.
On the album process:
Making this album was so different from the last one. I had seven years to write the last album, and a lot of time to get things wrong. Their wasn't any anticipation as much as there is now but this album was completely different. I had to make sure everybody that I went in with brought out the best in me. We had five weeks in the studio and that was it.
Meaning behind the album's cover art:
The image on the album cover is fearless. No make-up, no hair, just me. I wanted people to really see that.
On the Brandy duet and the cancelled Diana Ross tribute:
The Brandy duet was a dream. It was on my dream list. I had the honour of meeting Brandy and working with her at the Clive Davis pre Grammy party, where myself, Monica, and Brandy were doing a Diana Ross tribute. Sadly that night Whitney passed so we never performed. But I was able to maintain a friendship with Brandy and Monica.
I wrote 'Conquer The World' and was like, this would be an amazing duet with Brandy. So Claude (Songwriter & Producer Claude Kelly) and myself were like, just text her and that's what I did. I didn't say what the song was called, I didn't send her the song straight away, I just said I have a song that I think you could make gold dust. She recorded it and when I got sent it, I was like WOAH! I was getting my haircut, shape-up in the barbers and I started crying.
It was a lot. She's.. Brandy! She's amazing.
Be sure to be on the look out for Jessie J's album 'Alive' due in stores September 23 in NZ.
